Within this project I explore one of the themes within Franz Kafka’s novel, ‘Metamorphosis’, a domestic violence. After Gregor transforms into a giant bug, the story strikes with a picture of his parents who abused him both, after the transformation- as they couldn't accept his new form, and when he was still a human, as they used his money as the only source of livelihood.
In order to create a motion picture I executed a series of masks to symbolise how Gregor’s parents, like other domestic abusers ‘hide behind the mask’ of ordinary and seemingly exemplary people. It makes extremely hard for their environment to discover their crimes and deprives their victims of a chance to be rescued.
Each mask is made using a different medium- a plaster, the copper wire, a fabric, an acrylic and represents the particular case of a domestic abuse, reflecting its details- as an example, seven chains attached to the red mask represent seven children of Elizabeth Fritzl, the woman captivated in the basement and raped by her father. I focused on the stories which include the subject of the captivity to represent the duality of Gregor’s imprisonment in his house, as well as in his new body.
The project's process book is available.
